Hobart Hurricanes batter Ruth Johnston was dismissed in one of the most unusual manners during the match against Sydney Thunder in the Women's Big Bash League 2024. Ruth Johnston could only top edge the ball to hit the stumps off Shabnim Ismail during the knockout match in the ongoing tournament.
Hobart Hurricanes batted first in the knockout against Sydney Thunder at Drummoyne Oval in Sydney on Wednesday, November 27. Captain Elyse Villani won the toss and opted to bat first. Hobart added aggressive opener Ruth Johnston to their strong batting line-up for the must-win match in the event.
Watch: Ruth Johnston Dismissed in Most Bizarre Way Possible
Hobart Hurricanes lost the wicket of Ruth Johnston to Shabnim Ismail in the third over. Ismail bowled a sharp bouncer, and Johnston tried to pull but was hurried by the pace. She edged the ball, which went straight up in the air. Things turned bizarre when the ball landed on the crease and hit the stumps.
Shabnim Ismail sprinted towards the stumps to attempt a catch, and Ruth Johnston stopped and quickly turned around. However, it was too late, and the unusual dismissal left both players and fans bewildered.
7Cricket shared the clip on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) with the caption, "Sometimes, it's just not your day! Ruth Johnston is bowled in the most remarkable of circumstances 😳 #WBBL10."

Ruth Johnston's unusual dismissal triggered the collapse in Hobart Hurricanes' batting. Nicola Carey was out for just 1 off six balls, and Lizelle Lee scored 23 runs off 26 balls. Heather Graham was dismissed for 10, leaving Hobart in a precarious position at 47/4 after 10 overs.
Skipper Elyse Villani and Suzie Bates stabilized the Hobart innings. Villani hit boundaries at regular intervals. They opted for the Power Surge in the 16th over, and the duo added 23 runs, taking their partnership past 50. However, Peschel ended the 54-run stand in her final over by dismissing Bates for 17.
Captain Elyse Villani (53* runs off 42 balls) played a crucial role in helping the team set a competitive total. The Hurricanes finished their innings at 126/6 after 20 overs. Chamari Athapaththu and Taneale Peschel took two wickets each for Sydney, while Shabnim Ismail and HJ Darlington secured one wicket each.
