Shubman Gill, on Wednesday (August 7), pulled off a fine catch to end Kusal Mendis' fighting knock in the ongoing third ODI between Sri Lanka and India at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

After Charith Asalanka won the toss and opted to bat first, Sri Lanka openers gave their team a good start. Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando added 89 runs for the first wicket. Axar Patel gave India the much-needed first wicket by dismissing Nissanka for 45.

However, the breakthrough did not bring any respite for the visitors as Sri Lanka quickly recovered thanks to another 80-plus stand. Avishka and Kusal Mendis put Sri Lanka in the driver's seat by adding 82 runs for the second wicket. Debutant Riyan Parag broke the stand by dismissing Avishka for 96 and the breakthrough triggered a collapse for Sri Lanka.

The hosts lost four wickets in quick succession to find themselves reeling at 199/6 from 183/2. Kusal Mendis and Kamindu Mendis then stopped the rot with a much-needed 36-run stand. Kusal went on to complete a fine fifty but could not stay till the end as a fine catch from Shubman Gill sent him back in the 49th over.

On the 4th ball of the 49th over, Kuldeep Yadav bowled a short delivery and Kusal pulled it towards long-on. At first, it looked like the ball would sail over Gill's head. However, the India star did well to make a timely leap and caught the ball with both hands over his head right on the edge of the rope.

He then threw the ball in the air and regained his momentum by crossing the boundary before coming back to complete the catch. Kusal departed after scoring 59 runs from 82 balls with the help of 4 fours.

Sri Lanka eventually finished their innings on 248/7. For India, Riyan Parag impressed with the ball. Playing his first ODI, the youngster picked up 3 wickets for 54 runs. Speaking at the end of the innings, Parag said:

"A little disappointed, I could have given 10-15 runs less. It was turning in the back end. First 25 overs, there wasn't one bit of turn."
