Test debutant Washington Sundar had a dream start to his career as he claimed one of the greatest-ever Test batsmen Steve Smith as his maiden scalp on the opening day of the series decider against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane.

Washington Sundar was one of the two Indian players who was handed the elusive Indian Test cap at the Gabba after ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was ruled out due to severe back spasms.

Sundar, who became the 301st Indian Test cricketer, got his first crack at the red cherry in the closing stages of the first session against the duo of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne.

The Tamil Nadu off-spinner started on a brilliant note as he consistently troubled both Smith and Labuschagne with the leg-stump ploy. He delivered three back-to-back maidens heading into the Lunch break.

Ultimately, his hard work paid off as Steve Smith eventually fell into the leg-side trap after he flicked him straight to Rohit Sharma, who was stationed at short mid-wicket.

Meanwhile, Australia successfully recovered from a precarious position of 3/87 to finish the first day at 5/274 thanks to a brilliant ton by Marnus Labuschagne, handy contributions by Matthew Wade, Tim Paine, Cameron Green and of-course three dropped catches by Team India.
