With Steve Smith struggling to do well in Tests, an old video of Rohit Sharma and David Warner talking about opening the batting has gone viral.

After Warner retired from Tests in January, Steve Smith expressed his desire to open the innings in Tests for the first time in his career and the Australian team management gave him the opportunity. He opened the innings in Tests for the first time during the two-match Test series against West Indies and retained his position for the recently concluded series against New Zealand as well.

However, the former world number one Test batsman has struggled to do well as an opener so far. In his first Test as an opener, he scored 11 and 12* before being dismissed for 6 in his third outing. In his fourth outing, he scored an unbeaten 91 although West Indies went on to win the game.

Steve Smith struggled as an opener in New Zealand too, registering scores of 31, 0, 11, and 9. With the former Australia opener struggling, an old video of David Warner and Rohit Sharma talking about opening has gone viral on social media. Warner and Rohit are two of the most decorated openers of this generation and have excelled in all the formats of the game.

At the beginning of the click, Warner said (as quoted by TOI): “There was someone I said before something to Virat, ‘We’re no Smith and Kohli’, but at the end of the day, we make Smith and Kohli because we take the shine off the ball.”

Both Warner and Rohit started laughing before the latter said: “Absolutely.”

Warner then compared the role of openers to being guinea pigs, saying: “It’s the hardest job in the world. It’s like being President or Prime Minister, you opening the batting, you’re like guinea pigs.”

In reply, Rohit said: “Once someone told me that the reason you have scored double hundreds is because you open the batting. But they don’t understand what happens with it. When the conditions are tough, when you face all these guys who bowl 150 plus.”
