Senior India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin says that the team will face challenges of the highest order in the upcoming final of the inaugural WTC against New Zealand. But he assures the fans that the side will give its best and perform as they did on the historic tour to Australia a few months ago.
Team India staged an unimaginable comeback in Australia: humiliated in the first Test, lost the services of skipper Virat Kohli; kept losing first-choice players one by one; the youngsters stood up on the most intimidating of the venues – Gabba, where Australia haven’t lost in 32 years. A depleted Indian side showed immense courage and character to register an epic series triumph.
Ravichandran Ashwin himself was part of the side till the third Test; he played a significant role in the series for India, picking up 12 wickets and put on a valiant batting display to save the Sydney Test.
We are at least another week to 10 days away from even practising for the first time: Ravichandran Ashwin
Ravichandran Ashwin continued his form in the home England Test series as well. However, for him and for all the players, cricket halted when the IPL 2021 was suspended.
Now the players currently are in Mumbai, quarantining before leaving for England on June 2nd, and are likely to be placed in quarantine there as well. This means it would be about a month of non-cricket for the Indian players. On the other hand, the Kiwis are in England – they will play a 2-Test series against the hosts before going into the WTC final.
The Delhi Capitals off-spinner asserts this point saying that they will have to adapt quickly to the English conditions before the Southampton Test on June 18. However, he is confident that the players can do it, and make history again, this time in England.
“We are at least another week to 10 days away from even practising for the first time. Most of the players have not played cricket since the IPL was called off. So I think that is one of the biggest challenges, but once we go there I think the Indian team will adapt quickly and perform like we did in Australia,” Ravichandran Ashwin told The New Indian Express.
