Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar is hopeful that Yashasvi Jaiswal will make a long-lasting impression in the upcoming home Test series against England. The BCCI selection committee has named the Indian Test squad for the first two Test matches with Jaiswal included in the squad.

India will be aiming to replicate their recent home record against England in Tests, having defeated them 3-1 in 2020/21 and 4-0 in the 2016/17 series. A win in the home Test series against England will be a big achievement in India’s quest to win the ICC World Test Championship final.

Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a century in his Test debut against West Indies in July 2023. Since then in four Test matches, the youngster has scored 316 at an average of 45.14 including a century and a half century. He played in the second Test against South Africa and scored 28 in the second innings that he played.

Sunil Gavaskar Hopeful Of Yashasvi Jaiswal And Shreyas Iyer’s Good Show Against England

Speaking to Star Sports ahead of the first Test, Gavaskar said Jaiswal will settle easily in home conditions highlighting that the southpaw will establish himself as a Test batter after the series.

“Yashasvi Jaiswal will easily settle in home conditions. He’s also a left-hander. I think he’ll establish himself completely in the Indian Test team after this series,” said Gavaskar.

Gavaskar is further hopeful that Shreyas Iyer will also perform in the home Test series against England. He recently played a Ranji Trophy game for Mumbai. He has also thrown an open challenge to the England bowlers who are looking to target him with the short ball.

“In the World Cup, Shreyas Iyer batted brilliantly in Indian pitches, so I’m hoping he’ll play similarly at No.5 in the Test series. He batted aggressively, was quite watchful at the start and then his stroke-making after reading the pitch was a delight to watch. I hope he’ll replicate that,” Gavaskar added.

Iyer himself came out in the open while speaking about his weakness against the short ball. The South African pacers also targeted his weakness in the recent Test series. Iyer has scored 707 runs in 12 Test matches for India at an average of 39.27. He struggled against South Africa in the recent series scoring just 41 runs in four innings.

“I mean, rumors are spread everywhere and you’ll pick on those rumors. I have faith in myself, in my skills, and how much I’ve played. I’m experienced enough to play certain deliveries. And I may get out again and again, but I don’t mind, to be honest, as long as I have faith in myself and my teammates believe in me and support me. So that is a motivating factor for me. I don’t pay attention to anything else” Iyer said during the World Cup while responding to his issues against the short-ball.

The BCCI has named a 16-member side for the first two Test matches against England. Dhruv Jurel, the Rajasthan Royals keeper-batter has been drafted into the side while there is no place for Ishan Kishan. Avesk Khan too has been included in the side.

India’s squad for first two Tests vs England: Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), KS Bharat (wk), Dhruv Jurel (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Avesh Khan.
