Former India National Cricket Team all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has named the best captain of the team. He didn't name Virat Kohli, Sourav Ganguly, or MS Dhoni but instead went on to pick Anil Kumble, saying that he had a great attitude as a leader.
Yuvraj Singh was arguably one of the biggest matchwinners for the India National Cricket Team. The all-rounder played a huge role in the success of time, especially in white ball cricket, but also played a decent role for the team in Test cricket as well.
Yuvraj Singh, despite battling cancer, gave his best for the team and helped India National Cricket Team win the ICC World Cup 2011. He was the MVP of the team in the tournament as he won the Player of the Tournament for his heroics with bat and ball. Not only this, he also played a major role in T20 World Cup 2007.
Yuvraj Singh made his debut under Sourav Ganguly and then played under MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli as well. But according to him, none of the above were the best captains of the India National Cricket Team. He instead went on to pick Anil Kumble.
Speaking on the Club Prairie Fire YouTube Podcast, Yuvraj Singh cited how Anil Kumble took up the role in Australia. He explained how the leg-spinner always wanted to put himself in tough situations and pointed out his attitude was similar to Ricky Ponting's. He elaborated:
“Kumble became the Test captain when we came to Australia. I thought Kumble was a guy whose attitude was to take the ball when the situation is tough, not give it to another guy or when the wickets are falling let me take the ball.
“So I thought that kind of attitude was great in a leader. That’s why I talk about Ricky [Ponting] had the mentality of a leader, of stepping in to bat when the situation is tough, whatever the situation is, he is ready to bat."
Yuvraj Singh talks about the difference between MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly I'm terms of leadership
Yuvraj Singh also talked about the difference between MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly in terms of leadership. He mentioned that Southpaw was more aggressive while, on the other hand, keeper-batter also had plan B.
He also mentioned that Sourav Ganguly gave him, along with other players, a lot of confidence because he knew that they would turn out to be match-winners for the Indian team. He elaborated:
“Sourav was more of being aggressive, trying to take teams head-on. What I liked about Dhoni was, he always had a plan B. If plan A doesn’t work, go to plan B. So different captains.
“I got in the side when Sourav was the captain. He kind of gave us a lot of confidence and a lot of chances because we were younger, we were not consistent. Like myself Sehwag Bhajji [Harbhajan Singh] and Zaheer Khan. He kind of stick to us for a bit because he knew that these guys can be match-winners in the future."
