10 Cricketers Who Were Banned For Doping; Well, when everything goes right in your life, sometimes, an unexpected piece struck you, which takes away everything with it. Similarly, cricketers too experience such stuff when they try certain things, which leads to banning for a particular period of time or sometimes, a life ban. One of those aspects for a cricketer is being banned because of doping.

Once a cricketer is banned because of doping, he would certainly lose all his fame and the trust on him for the fans. It takes real hard work and performance from them to get back on the track. The Baroda cricketer had provided a urine sample as part of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) anti-doping testing programme during a domestic Twenty20 competition on March 16, 2017, in New Delhi.

His sample was subsequently tested and found to contain Terbutaline, which is a specified substance. It is prohibited both in and out of competition in the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited list of substances. Currently, he is playing T20 competitions. In IPL, he is plying his trade for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The brilliant fast bowler from Pakistan has always ended up on the wrong side of things. He has always been on the headlines for all the wrong reasons despite being the exceptional fast bowler for Pakistan.

Mohammad Asif is the regular customer to get under the hammer of Pakistan. He never had a smooth run during his career, as he always found guilty on quite a few aspects. The first time he was suspended was in November 2006 along with Shoaib Akhtar.

He was handed a one-year ban by the Indian Premier League Drugs Tribunal for failing a dope test during the first season of IPL. The right-arm medium pacer was also detained at the Dubai International Aiport in 2008 on suspicion of possessing illegal drugs in his wallet.

The legendary spinner Shane Warne isn’t an exception from the chart. The leg-spinner has been tested positive for a diuretic – a substance that is often used as a weight-reducing drug. Warne Flew back to Australia immediately to undergo further tests from the middle of the 2003 World Cup. The initial one was a routine test carried out by the ACB.

Despite asking apology and conveying his innocence in the matter, the board handed him a one-year ban. He returned to international cricket in 2004 after a ban of 12 months and continued to be an integral part of the team till his retirement in 2007.

7. Shoaib Akhtar:

Yet another Pakistan cricketer makes into the chart. Another common thing is that both are fast bowlers and took that drug alongside each other. The duo was found guilty of using the banned anabolic steroid nandrolone, by a three-man drugs tribunal formed by the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Both men tested positive after dope tests conducted internally by the PCB at the end of September. They were pulled out of Pakistan’s squad for the Champions Trophy on October 16, the day before their opening game. Surprisingly, he was banned for 2 years while Mohammad Asif was banned for one year.

6. Stephen Fleming:

Perhaps, a shock for the majority of fans to see his name on the paper. The cool and composed character also banned from the game of cricket after testing positive in the dope Test. Turning the clock back to 1993-94, Fleming was banned with a few other cricketers for smoking, which was for recreational purposes.

He was not found guilty of using performance-enhancing drugs, but he was charged with smoking pot along with a few other Kiwi players involving Dion Nash and Matthew Hart. Danny Morrison was also present in the situation but he wasn’t involved in taking such things. In fact, he was the one, who complained regarding those things.

Fleming was fined $175 along with Dion Nash and Matthew Hart but he admitted it had cost him tens of thousands in legal fees and had also lost sponsorship. They were also banned for remaining part of the series against West Indies.

Yeah, the greatest of the game also finds a place in the chart. The English cricketer has been one of the legendary persons for England but was banned for bringing the disgrace to the game of cricket.

After a poor show in the tour to West Indies, he was the regular headliner on the news. However, apart from that, there came a report stating the use of cannabis by Ian Botham, after his previous claims of denial.

This resulted in a series of attacks by the media, questioning his morality and demanding a life ban. Amidst all the ruckus, ECB decided to ban him for 63 days. He made a terrific comeback taking wickets off his first and twelfth delivery, also going past Dennis Lillee’s world Test wickets record.

4. Upul Tharanga:

The 26-year-old Tharanga tested positive for banned substance prednisolone – a drug for asthma, a condition from which he is said to suffer. He became the first Sri Lankan cricketer to have failed a dope test. He has been handed a three-month suspension from all cricket and cricket-related activities by the ICC for failing a drugs test during the 2011 World Cup.

Tharanga had provided a urine sample as part of the ICC’s random in-competition testing programme after the World Cup semi-final between New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Colombo on March 29.

His sample was tested by a WADA accredited laboratory and found to contain Prednisone and Prednisolone, which are ‘Specified Substances’ under WADA’s prohibited list and are banned from being used in competition.

3. Yasir Shah:

The Pakistan spinner Yasir Shah also banned for the same. He has been handed a three-month suspension by the ICC after he pleaded guilty to breaching the ICC’s Anti-Doping Code that relates to the presence of a banned substance in a player’s sample.

During the announcement of the ban, ICC said it accepted that the doping offence had been inadvertent on the part of Shah as the medication had been taken “for therapeutic reasons, specifically to treat his blood pressure.

The tablet, which he consumed was found to contain the presence of chlortalidone, a Prohibited Substance which appears in Section 5 of the WADA Prohibited List. It saw him missing Asia Cup and ICC T20I World Cup.

The well-built All-rounder, who is currently the hot property in the world cricket also makes into the chart. He was banned for one year from cricket for a whereabouts clause violation by an independent anti-doping panel in Kingston. The ban was effective from January 31, 2017, and will last until January 30, 2018.

One of the most sought after T20 freelancer missed out on playing PSL and IPL during that phase of his life. He termed that was a tough phase of his life and made himself stronger and trained to make a comeback.

However, as he said, he made a terrific comeback. Andre Russell soon became one of the greatest T20 players ever produced by West Indies.

One of the shocking headlines in the recent past is the ban on Prithvi Shaw. The youngster, who was expected to be in the squad across the formats for the next few series was banned for doping.

Recently, BCCI announced that opener Prithvi Shaw had failed a dope test and has therefore been banned till November 15. It was also mentioned that his period of ineligibility has been deemed to have started on March 16.

Shaw had provided a urine sample as part of the BCCI’s anti-doping testing program during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match on February 22 in Indore. His sample was subsequently tested and found to contain Terbutaline. Terbutaline, a specified substance, is prohibited both In & Out of Competition in the WADA Prohibited List of Substances.
