5 Instances When Bangladesh Stained The Gentleman's Game

Updated - 21 Apr 2021, 11:22 PM

Bangladesh U19 team created history on Sunday after winning their first-ever U19 World Cup. They beat defending champions India in the final of the tournament to stun the spectators. However, all their efforts on the field went in vain as their actions off it were disgraceful and pathetic. Just like they have been in international cricket over the years, their junior side behaved in the same manner throughout the game, pretty disrespectful and mannerless.

There is a reason Cricket is called ‘The Gentleman’s Game’. But, the Bangla Tigers just don’t seem to learn the lesson. Things got worse when the game finished off as they uttered slangs towards the Indian players and fans. This caused a spat among the players after the game and now the International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved to open an enquiry on the incident.

This isn’t the first occasion when the Bengal tigers got carried away on the pitch. Even the senior national side has had its share of controversy. They have faced widespread criticism for losing their cool. The behaviour of the senior cricketers seems to have negatively inspired the juniors as well.

Here we look at 5 Instances when Bangladesh Players Crossed Their Line:

1. ICC U19 World Cup Final 2020:

As soon as the game ended, the Bengali young lads young guns ran across the field and celebrated like hooligans. They approached the Indian players and were seen swearing at them and the Indian fans. They provoked the Indian players unnecessarily and seem to have insulted them. ICC has approved to open an investigation in the matter. Bangladesh captain Akbar Ali was sensible enough to apologize after the game.

2. Nidahas Trophy:

In 2018, India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh played a T20I Tri-Series and the tournament was named Nidahas Trophy. In a game between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, the game saw yelling, shoving and finger-pointing culminated in a shattered dressing room door at the R Premadasa stadium on March 17, 2018. First, the then Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan entered into a war of words with the match-officials after which the game was halted for quite a while. A few Bangladeshi bench players – who were serving drinks to the players – also misbehaved with Sri Lankan cricketers on the ground during the match.

3. Mushfiqur Rahim’s Tweet After India’s Loss In the World T20 Semi-final

Mushfiqur Rahim posted a disgraceful tweet after India’s loss to West Indies in the semi-final in the ICC T20 World Cup in 2016. India beat and eliminated Bangladesh from the tournament. Bangladesh had the game in their hands but they choked in the final over and couldn’t score two runs in three balls against India. This raged their own fans and when India lost to West Indies in the semi-final, Mushfiqur Rahim came up with this specimen of unsportsmanlike conduct.

4. Bangladesh Fans Disrespect MS Dhoni:

In 2016, a picture of Bangladesh’s right-arm pacer Taskin Ahmed carrying the severed head of the then Indian limited-overs captain MS Dhoni went viral over social media. The picture was uploaded on micro-blogging site Twitter after Bangladesh stunned Pakistan to set up a summit clash with the Men in Blue in the Asia Cup 2016 Final.

5. Bangladesh Media Joins the List:

In 2015 when Team India struggled to cope with pacer Mustafizur Rahman, a Bangla newspaper “Prothom Alo”, in its Monday edition (Weekly humour magazine – “Rosh Alo”), published a distasteful advertisement which left Indian fans fuming.
