Virat Kohli

Team India skipper Virat Kohli is arguably the greatest batsman across formats and his records speak volume for his credentials which he has showcased over the last 8-9 years. Kohli has scored run all across the globe. However, England has been one country where Kohli hasn’t had a ball and failed quite miserably when India toured England in 2014. He kept fishing outside the off stump. There was no doubt that Kohli had some technical issues back then. However, given the player, he is now, Kohli might have a breakthrough series in England across formats.

Here are 5 success mantras which might work for Kohli

Sticking to the basics

It will be the most important aspect of his game which might change the fortunes around for Kohli in England. He has practised a lot for this tour and his decision to play in the County Championship shows how determined he is to score runs in England. His plan of playing County didn’t quite materialize in the end.

However, his injury might well turn out to be a blessing in disguise for Kohli. He has to stick to the basics. He has been a champion batsman in all 3 formats hence he should be focussed on his job at hand and not look to something out of the ordinary.

Playing his natural game

Kohli has to play his natural game and put behind his horrendous performances in England in 2014. If the failure of the tour of 2014 comes to haunt Kohli he won’t be able to play his natural game.

However, he is a legend especially in the shorter formats and it will be a matter of time that Kohli sets his record straight all across the globe.

He is naturally a gifted stroke-maker. Kohli has worked a lot on deliveries outside the off stump. He should start leaving deliveries outside the off stump especially in Tests.

Minimum Verbal duels with media

In the past, Kohli had several verbal duels with the media. This is an aspect of his game which needs to improve at the earliest. It is indeed a fact that needling the opposition gets the best out of him. However, it must stay in the field only.

His numerous verbal duels in the media have on occasions backfired and the team hasn’t been able to concentrate on the job at hand.

Kohli has the tendency of over exaggerating any situation and needling the oppositions without a rhyme or reason. A captain is as good as his team and hence he should keep it in mind.

He has improved and matured quite a lot in the recent years. However, there is still room for improvement. He has to understand the fact that it is not necessary to poke the oppositions all the time. On occasions, it does get the better out of him but he has to keep in mind that every member of the team is not the same.

Believe in his own abilities both as a skipper and a batsman

One of the main reason behind Kohli’s success in the recent time has been a belief in himself which has also instilled in the whole team. England hasn’t been a happy breeding ground for Kohli hence that thinking might creep in just a bit.

He will be leading the team for the first time in England so it will be a challenge for him on that front. However, the presence of MS Dhoni only if for the limited overs series will be vital for India’s chances.
