Former India opener Aakash Chopra has taken a sly dig at the individuals who have been applying to become Team India’s head coach. Current head coach Ravi Shastri’s tenure will come to an end after the upcoming tour of West Indies. Shastri’s contract had ended after the World Cup before the BCCI handed him a 45-day extension.

The BCCI has already started inviting application from the individuals who wish to become India’s next coach. However, just like the last time it looks like the entire process is a mere formality. In 2017, Ravi Shastri took over as head coach after Virat Kohli made his choice clear. The turn of events had completely undermined the entire selection process.

And Shastri looks to be appointed India’s coach once again despite an extensive process at place to choose the coach. Ex-India coach Anshuman Gaekwad, who was appointed by the Supreme Court Appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) as part of a three-member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), has already said that Shastri would continue as coach.

“Speaking purely from the results perspective, he (Shastri) has done quite well. So, besides Ravi, all other positions (in the coaching and support staff) in my opinion are open depending on who is applying, their credentials and whether they meet the criteria of the BCCI,” Gaekwad told Mid-Day.

Skipper Kohli has also thrown his support behind Shastri, saying that he would love to continue working with the current coach. The two statements have all but sealed the fate of the candidates who are applying to become India’s next coach. And amidst all these, Aakash Chopra has taken a dig at those who have applied for the post.

Wishing luck to the candidates, Aakash Chopra tweeted:

“Captain has voiced his preference. One of the CAC members has done the same for the position of Team India’s Head Coach. Good luck to the ones who’re still applying or have already applied.”
