Abdul Samad was one of the men amongst the SunRisers Hyderabad, who put up a valiant effort; however, could not get his side over the line. Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh heaped praises on Abdul Samad.

SunRisers Hyderabad mentor VVS Laxman recruited Abdul Samad as the franchise needed a power-hitter in the lower order. The teenage cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir made his IPL debut against Delhi Capitals and smoked some boundaries against the likes of Anrich Nortje. He did once again against the same bowling attack, scoring 33 off 16 deliveries and shared a stand of 57 with Kane Williamson.

Samad came in at the fall of Jason Holder as SunRisers had to chase 190 to face Mumbai Indians in the final. The 19-year old took Nortje to the cleaners in his third over, hitting him for two fours and a six. Nevertheless, as the Orange Army’s main man Williamson departed, wickets kept tumbling. Samad became one of the four victims of Kagiso Rabada.
