Afghanistan finally realised their dream of playing Test cricket as they walked out at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium to play their debut Test against India. It was indeed a historic moment for the Asian side who has improved by leaps and bounds in the last years. They have taken giant strides in international cricket and hence have been handed an opportunity to play at the highest level. Playing The No 1 ranked side in the world is indeed a big achievement for the Afghans.

It was just last year that they were granted the Test status and they would be pretty pleased to have realised their dream in a country who supported them endlessly. Afghanistan came into the series on the back of a 3-0 drubbing to Bangladesh. It was a great effort by Rashid Khan which was instrumental in handing them a series whitewash.

Meanwhile coming back to Afghanistan’s debut test, it was Indian stand-in-skipper Ajimkya Rahane who won the toss and opted to bat. It was Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay who walked out in the middle to begin proceedings. KL Rahul was waiting in the wings and was included in the playing XI in place of regular skipper Virat Kohli.

Rahul and Dhawan began pretty well and struck the occasional boundaries. Afghanistan would have got their 1st Test wicket quite earlier had they gone for a review on the 5th delivery of the 10th over. It was a back of a length delivery from Wafadar and Dhawan apparently edged it to the wicketkeeper Afsar Zazai.

Visitors don’t go for the review which proves costly

The players were pretty interested to go for the review. But Stanikzai decided against it after a discussion. Mohammad Shehzad who was fielding in the circle was quite animated and wanted them to take the review. Afghanistan went on to pay for their mistake as Dhawan went on to smash his 6th Test century. It was a sensational inning from the southpaw. He was eventually dismissed on 107 of 96 deliveries, an innings which included 19 fours and 3 sixes.

Rain played spoilsport for a bit. Meanwhile, Murali Vijay on the other end has been left stranded ob 99 after the rain stopped play for the 3rd time in the day so far. India is currently 264/1 in 48.4 overs.
