Asia Cup 2018: Final, India vs Bangladesh – Statistical Highlights

India beat Bangladesh by three wickets to win a record seventh Asia Cup title. A game, that was fitting for any final,  swung from side to side before the Men in Blue won it on the very last ball of the match.

Batting first, Bangladesh managed just 222 despite being 120 for no loss at one stage. Liton Das led the way with the bat by scoring a sizzling 121. However, his teammates failed to capitalise on the good start as Bangladesh eventually paid the price for a poor finish with the bat.

The Tigers gave India a run for their money but eventually ended up losing their third Asia Cup final in six years.

With the game now all done and dusted, here is a look at all the interesting statistics and numbers:

1. Liton Das and Mehidy Hasan added 120 runs for the first wicket.  It was the first century-stand for Bangladesh for the first wicket since Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes’s 102-run partnership against New Zealand on 31 December 2016.

2. Liton’s 121 is the highest individual score by a Bangladeshi in a final. Sabbir Rahman previously held the record for his 77-run knock against India in the Nidahas Trophy final this year.

3. Liton became the first Bangladesh and fifth overall to score a century in the Asia Cup final. The other four are Sanath Jayasuriya, Fawad Alam, Lahiru Thirimanne and Marvan Atapattu.

4. This is the first time India completed a run-chase in an ODI game on the final ball of the match. This is the second time Bangladesh ended up on the losing side in such fashion after the 2006 Harare ODI against Zimbabwe.

5.  Mehidy Hasan Miraz is the first player to open with both bat and ball for Bangladesh in the same International match.

6. This is only the second instance when a team completed the chase in an ODI final on the last ball of the game. Pakistan did it first when Javed Miandad hit a six on the final ball during the 1986 Austral-Asia Cup against India.

7.  Rohit Sharma has won all the six finals as captain in his professional career. He won four T20 finals with Mumbai Indians and two with India with both of them against Bangladesh.

8. Rohit Sharma finished the tournament with 317 runs. And he became only the 2nd captain to score 300+ runs in a single edition of the Asia Cup after MS Dhoni (327 runs in 2008).

9. The win was India’s 700th in International cricket. They are the 3rd team after Australia (995) and England (767) to win 700 International matches.

10. MS Dhoni affected two stumping in the game which helped him complete a staggering 800 dismissals in International cricket. He is only the 3rd wicketkeeper with 800 dismissals across all the three formats.
