Asia Cup Groups. Asia Cup is a cricket tournament that got underway in 1984. It is the only continental championship in the game of cricket. So far, 15 editions of the tournament have been played. In the first two editions of the competitions, three teams participated while in the third edition, four teams took part.

The highest number of teams participating in a single edition of the Asia Cup has been 6 so far. In 2004, 2008, 2018, and 2022, six teams participated in the competition.

1984 Asia Cup:

Asia Cup was first held in the year 1984. It was hosted in the United Arabia of Emirates. Only three teams – India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka – participated in the competition. The tournament was played in a round-robin format where each team played against the other team once. The team with the most points was adjudged the winner. India won the title after beating both Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

1986 Asia Cup:

The second edition of the Asia Cup was held in Sri Lanka with three teams participating in it. Apart from hosts Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh participated in the tournament. India decided to boycott the competition due to poor relations with Sri Lanka after a controversial series in the Island nation the previous year.

The format of the competition remained as it was in 1984. Sri Lanka were the winners after winning both their games while Pakistan managed one win. Bangladesh ended the competition without a win.

1988 Asia Cup:

The third edition of the Asia Cup witnessed more than three teams participating in the continental championship for the first time. Bangladesh hosted the competition for the first time and welcomed India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The tournament was a round-robin tournament where each team played the other three once, and the top two teams qualified for a place in the final.

India and reigning Asian champions Sri Lanka made it to the final. In the title decider, India thrashed Sri Lanka by 6 wickets to lift the trophy for the second time

1990/91 Asia Cup:

India hosted the Asia Cup for the first time and so far only time in the 1990/91 season. Three teams participated in the competition after Pakistan boycotted it due to poor relations with India. Apart from the hosts, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh were the other participants.

As far as the format is concerned, each team played against the other two teams once and the top two teams qualified for the final. India and Sri Lanka made it to the final after winning 2 and 1 games respectively. In the final, India beat Sri Lanka to win the Asia Cup for the fourth time.

1995 Asia Cup:

UAE hosted the Asia Cup for the second time in 1995. Once again, four teams – India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka took part in the continental championship. The tournament was played in a round-robin format where each team played the other once and the top two teams made it to the final.

India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan finished the league stage with 4 points. India and Sri Lanka pipped Pakistan to the final due to a better run rate. In the final, India once again thrashed Sri Lanka by 8 wickets to win their fourth Asia Cup title.

1997 Asia Cup:

In 1997, Sri Lanka hosted the Asia Cup. Four teams – Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh took part in the competition. As per the format, each team was to play against the other three teams once. Sri Lanka finished the league stage as the best team, winning all of their 3 games.

India and Pakistan, on the other hand, finished with 1 win each while Bangladesh Bangladesh could not open their account once again. India progressed to the final ahead of Pakistan due to their better net run rate. In the final, Sri Lanka finally beat India to win their second Asia Cup title.

2000 Asia Cup:

The 2000 edition of the continental championship was hosted by Bangladesh. Once again four teams – Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan – participated in the tournament. Pakistan finished the league stage with the most wins after beating all the other three teams. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, won two while India ended with 1 win.

Bangladesh once again failed to win a game. In the final, Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by 39 runs to win their first-ever Asia Cup title.

2004 Asia Cup:

In 2004, the Asia Cup saw the participation of more than 4 teams for the first time. Sri Lanka hosted the competition. Apart from the home side, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, and United Arab Emirates also took part in the tournament.

The 6 teams were divided into two groups of 3 teams each. Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Hong Kong were in Group A while Sri Lanka, India, and United Arab Emirates formed Group B. The top two teams from each group made it to the next stage – Super 4s. Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh made it to the Super 4s. After the Super 4s, India and Sri Lanka made it the to final where the latter beat the former to win the Asia Cup for the third time.

2008 Asia Cup:

Pakistan hosted the Asia Cup in 2008. Six teams including India participated in that edition. India visited Pakistan to play in the continental championship for the very first time. The six teams were divided into two groups of three teams each.

Group A consisted of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates while Group B consisted of India, Pakistan, and Hong Kong. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka qualified from Group A while India and Pakistan progressed from Group B for the Super 4s. Sri Lanka and India made it to the final where Sri Lanka thrashed the Men in Blue by 100 runs to lift the trophy.

2010 Asia Cup:

In 2010, the Asia Cup was held in Sri Lanka with only the Test-playing nations of the continent participating in it. Apart from the hosts, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh took part in the tournament. In the league stage, each team played against each other once and the top two teams qualified for the final.

Sri Lanka and India once again set up a title clash between themselves by winning 3 and 2 games respectively. In the final, India beat the hosts and the reigning champions by 81 runs to win the title.

2012 Asia Cup:

Bangladesh were the host for the 2012 edition of the Asia Cup. For the second tournament in a row, only the Test-playing nations – India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka – participated in the tournament. After the round-robin league, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India finished with two wins each while Sri Lanka remained winless.

Pakistan made it to the final due to a bonus point while Bangladesh qualified due to their better head-to-head record against India. In the final, Pakistan beat Bangladesh by 2 runs to win their second title.

2014 Asia Cup:

The 2014 edition of the tournament was held in Bangladesh too. A total of five teams – Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Afghanistan – participated in the competition. Afghanistan were playing in the tournament for the very first time.

The tournament was once again played in a round-robin format where each team played against the other once. After the league stage, Sri Lanka and Pakistan made it to the final after winning 4 and 3 matches respectively. On the other hand, India ended their campaign with 2 wins while Bangladesh won one game. In the final, Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 5 wickets.

2016 Asia Cup:

The 2016 edition of the Asia Cup was a historic edition since the competition was held in the T20 format for the very first time. For the third time in a row, Bangladesh were the host for the Asia Cup. Apart from Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and United Arab Emirates participated in the tournament.

After the league stage, India and Bangladesh emerged as the top two teams. While India won all of their 4 league games, Bangladesh won three followed by Pakistan and Sri Lanka who won 2 and 1 game respectively. UAE, on the other hand, could not open their account. In the final, India thrashed Bangladesh by 8 wickets to lift the trophy.

2018 Asia Cup:

Asia Cup made a return to the UAE in 2018. The tournament was last hosted in the country way back in 1995. The continental championship also returned to its traditional ODI format. Asia Cup 2018 was originally scheduled to be hosted by India but the venue had to be shifted due to the poor bilateral relation between the hosts and Pakistan.

A total of six teams participated in it. The teams were divided into two groups. India, Pakistan and Hong Kong were in Group A while Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan were in Group B. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan made it to the Super 4s. In the Super 4s, India and Bangladesh won two games each to make it to the final. In the final, India beat Bangladesh to lift the trophy for a record-extending seventh time.

Asia Cup 2022 was also played in the UAE and in the T20 format. Six teams participated in the competition and were divided into two groups. India, Pakistan, and Hong Kong were in Group A while Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan were in Group B.

India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan made it to the Super 4s. Sri Lanka and Pakistan then made it to the final after winning 3 and 2 games respectively. In the final, Sri Lanka stunned Pakistan by 5 wickets to lift the trophy for the sixth time.
