England completed a series win at the Sydney Cricket Ground as they defeated Australia by 16 runs in the third ODI courtesy of a brilliant match-winning hundred by England’s wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler. Australia had put England into bat in the third ODI and took full advantage of the conditions restricting the tourists to 189/6 in 38.1 overs, but Butler propelled the score to a match-winning total of 302 in 50 overs.
This knock earned Buttler praises from some of the masters of the cricketing World. Former English captain Michael Vaughan, who has hailed Butler after his fifth ODI century and has stated him superior to former Indian captain MS Dhoni who is hailed as one of the best finishers in ODI cricket.
Vaughan said:
“Buttler has done this before for England, I remember in Dubai against Pakistan. He just exploded from a 50 to a 100 very quickly. He’s just got the gift. I don’t think there’s a better middle order batsman in the world in white ball cricket. The Indians are going nuts because they’d say MS Dhoni but I do think Buttler has just gone ahead of MS Dhoni because of his approach and because of the power that he brings.”
Vaughan also added:
“Timing is everything, timing for his team today. His team was in a difficult situation. He was well supported by Woakes . Woakes again has come out and played with the freedom to allow Buttler to hang in there and then explode at the end. It was a very special partnership led by an unbelievable century by Jos.”
