Bangladesh Women's Team Crowned as 2018 Asia Cup Champions

In a nerve-jangling grand finale on super Sunday (June 10) of the Women’s Asia Cup 2018, Bangladesh held nerves to lift their maiden title by three wickets owing to a last-ball thriller.

Meanwhile, chasing down the target of 113, Bangladesh banked on a solid start of 35 provided by their opening pair of Ayasha Rahman and Shamima Sultana. However, Poonam Yadav brought India back into the game while picking two quick wickets.

The Agra-based 26-year-old leg-spinner Poonam finished her quota of splendid four overs. She bagged four wickets for just nine runs but that didn’t prove to be enough.

Nigar Sultana was the top scorer for Bangladesh with 24-ball 27. Jahanara Alam, who struck the winning runs remained not out on two of a solitary ball. At the other end, skipper Salma Khatun didn’t face a single delivery, before bursting into a wild celebration.

Earlier, batting first, the six-time champion India posted a below-par total of 112 for nine in 20 allotted overs on a sluggish-looking surface.

But, leading from the front, Harmanpreet Kaur kept India in the hunt. She smashed 42-ball 56 which was laced with seven boundaries. On the other side, India kept on losing wickets at regular intervals.

Moreover, opening batswoman Mihali Raj scored 11, as Veda Krishnamurthy was bowled on the same score with Jhulan Goswami facing 12 deliveries for her hard-fought 10.

However, For Bangladesh women’s, Rumana Ahmed and Khadija shared two wickets each as Salma and Jahanara Alam bagged wicket apiece.
