On a bright afternoon at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in 2013, Chris Gayle, for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) unleashed havoc on the Pune Warriors’ bowlers. The Universe Boss clattered the fastest century in T20 cricket (30 balls) and eventually ended the innings unbeaten at 175 off 66 deliveries. It consisted of 13 fours and 17 sixes, which is the most number of maximums in an inning. Bangalore amassed 263 in 20 overs and won the game by 130 runs.
The Jamaican remembered that unforgettable knock, stating that after rain interrupted their proceedings following Pune putting them to bat, he had a conversation with fellow countryman, Ravi Rampaul. Gayle told the seamer that they needed 170-180 on the board since the pitch was a belter. Hence, after the rain lessened, openers Gayle and Tillakaratne Dilshan picked off from where they left.
“I remember we were put into bat first and rain interrupted the proceedings after a couple of overs. So we had to return to the dressing room. My West Indies teammate Ravi Rampaul was in the side that time and I told him that the wicket was a belter. We needed to get a minimum of 170-180 to give ourselves a chance to win the game. Eventually, I walked back into the middle after rain subsided and I picked up from where I left off,” the southpaw admitted during the show “Open Nets with Mayank”.
I was in that flow and rhythm: Chris Gayle
The 40-year old went on to state that where a batsman could not mishit or do anything wrong. Gayle admitted that it was a remarkable feeling to have hit 175 out of the 263 runs by himself. Chris Gayle also bowled one over of off-spin in which he conceded five runs and picked up two wickets.
“I was in that flow and rhythm. As a batsman, you get the feeling sometimes that you cannot do anything wrong. And it was one of those days. It was remarkable that I was speaking about a team total of 175 but ended up scoring those many runs myself,” he added.
