Eight Bookies Arrested For Running 'Fake' UVA T20 League In Mohali

The Mohali Police has booked eight persons for their association with the ‘fake’ UVA T20 League setup near Mohali after a complaint was filed with two accused remanded to police custody till July 6, the Indian Express reported in further development. A number of bookies involved in the matter were absconding as police raided their hideouts.

For the uninitiated, on YouTube, a commentary from a match in Uva T20 league, said that the match was being brought live to the audience from the Badulla Cricket Ground in Sri Lanka. In originality, there was no such match played at that venue.

The game was played at a ground in Sawara village, 16 km from Chandigarh off Punjab State Highway 12A. No Sri Lankans were playing, only unknown cricketers from Punjab, wearing masks over their faces and colourful, numbered jerseys, Indian Express reported.

The Uva cricket association denied running such tournament with names like Farvez Maharoof vehemently denying their connection.

Inspector Sukhbir Singh said that eight persons involved in the matter have been arrested and remaining have been absconding. He also added that raids have been carried out in different locations where their possible hideouts could be.

“The eight persons involved in this case have been identified as Jolly Sardar, Pankaj, Goldy, Varun Kumar, Suveen, Raju Kalia, Jatinder Kumar Battu and Sahil Khurana of which Raju and Pankaj were arrested on Thursday night and the remaining persons are absconding. We are conducting raids at the hideouts of the accused,” Inspector Sukhbir Singh, Station House Officer, Kharar (Sadar), told The Indian Express.

Further, the Mohali Police are also checking their past criminal history after being nabbed for involvement in conducting the tournament.
