England vs West Indies 2020, 3rd Test, Day 3 – Twitter Reactions
Updated - 27 Jul 2020, 01:17 AM
England have asserted themselves into the driver’s seat after a near-perfect day of Test match cricket that saw them bowl the West Indies out in the first innings, set-up a lead and then have them two down at the close of the third days play. West Indies finished the day at 2-10 after Stuart Broad, who took all the six West Indian wickets to fall, continued his imperious display late in the day to take his overall wickets tally to 499. It was typical Stuart Broad- probing outside the off-stump before inducing an outside edge.
It was a day when Stuart Broad once again testified why he is such an irresistible force in English conditions and why he should never have been dropped from the playing XI in the first Test.
Just like the second day, West Indies started the third morning on a positive note. Jason Holder, who brought up his 2000th Test run during his innings, stiched a 50-run-stand for the 7th wicket with Shane Dowrich and took the visitors past the 150-run mark.
But just as it looked like the duo will stage some sort of a recovery, Stuart Broad once again came up a brilliant spell that saw the West Indies lose their last four wickets for 19 runs. Stuart Broad [6-31] claimed all of those four wickets as he finished with a six-wicket haul, taking his overall wicket tally to 497. With an overall lead of 170 runs, England openers Rory Burns and Dom Sibley then proceeded to ground the West Indian attack into the dust, courtesy a dodged 114-run-stand- England’s 1st 100+ opening stand in home Tests since 2016.
Rory Burns 90 and 50s from Joe Rot and Dom Sibley helped England take a 399 lead
Captain Joe Root gave England’s innings a much-needed acceleration. The England captain played some gorgeous stroked during his run-a-ball innings, and along with Rory Burns took England’s lead past the 350-run mark. Root [68*] registered his 50 with an authoritative stroke down the ground off Kemar Roach and followed it up two more boundaries in the same over to signal England’s intent of a potential declaration before the close of play.
Rory Burns [90] too played some strokes in an attempt to get his hundred quickly, and the southpaw died for his teams cause when he top-edged, one straight to the keeper, leading to an eventual declaration at an overall lead of 399.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the 3rd days play between England and West Indies:
What a day for Stuart Broad.
He took all six West Indies wickets to fall on day three and will go to bed tonight on 499 Test wickets.#ENGvWI pic.twitter.com/hvzQpBGyxs

In the last decade, Stuart Broad has taken 5+ wickets in a day of Test cricket on 12 occasions.
No seamer in the world has done so on more occasions, in that period.#ENGvWI

That's a serious fifty from Root. Our eXpected model forecasts an average player would have scored 29 runs off the 49 balls faced by Root – that puts him +26 xR above expectation. Of course, Root is no average player. #ENGvWI

Test series with the team losing the toss always winning the match (3+ matches):-
India beat NZ 3-1 in 1968
Australia beat PAK 3-0 in 2004-05
Australia beat WI 3-0 in 2005
India beat AUS 4-0 in 2013This series has a good chance of making it there.#ENGvWI

England should look to score quick runs as bad weather may be a factor in the next two days. Buttler & Stokes should be the next in the batting line-up. Felt Buttler could’ve batted at 3#ENGvWI

In hindsight dropping Stuart Broad in the Southampton was a mistake. England went in with extra pace then. Broad, no doubt, was disappointed but hungry to perform. His 6/31 v WI is a reminder—Never write off champions. And he scored 62(45) in the first innings as well #ENGvWI

Admittedly Caribbean Crkt was/is poor by all International requirements..but surely England can be a little more ‘entertaining’ fr TV viewers..or are they having batting practice in the ‘middle’ fr Pakistanis..?! Just as well no crowds to ‘run away’ frm Test Crkt..!!!

Rory Burns & Dom Sibley
– first opening pair to register 100+ opening stand at home since 2016
– first pair of England openers to score 50+ in the same innings since 2016/17 (Cook 130 & Hameed 82 v Ind, Rajkot)#ENGvWI

Rahkeem Cornwall has bowled accurately, with little luck. On top of that missed LBW (which would have been out on review), Cornwall has found more spin than Chase (1.5 degrees v 1.2) and pitched on a good length more often (54% v 37%) – and yet he's wicketless. #ENGvWI
