Former Netherlands skipper Peter Borren has once again sparked the debate over the number of participating teams in the World Cup being reduced to ten. There has been considerable protest from the Associate nations about the ICC reducing the 2019 World Cup to a 10-team affair. The debate gained huge momentum last year when Scotland beat England – ranked No. 1 in the world – in a high-scoring thriller.

The ICC’s World Cup Qualifier, held in March 2018, had Zimbabwe, Scotland, Ireland, United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Nepal, Papua New Guinea and Hong Kong participating with eventual finalists West Indies and Afghanistan.  The tournament was played without DRS and that hurt Scotland big time as they missed out on progressing ahead after some key moments went against them. Scotland had finished the Super Sixes on five points, just one behind Afghanistan, who finished second with six points and thus qualified for the World Cup along with West Indies.

Ever since then the call for including more teams in the World Cup have totally dominated the scenes. And now Borren has once again reiterated it. The Netherlands legend took to Twitter to post a cryptic tweet after seeing all the captains of the ten participating teams in the 2019 World Cup sitting together in the captains’ meet.  Writing the names of the captains of other captains of international teams, Borren wrote:

“This would be a better photo if Rohan Mustafa, Graeme Cremer, William Porterfield, Kyle Coetzer, Babar Hayat, Pieter Seelaar and Paras Khadka were in it.”

Meanwhile, the 2019 World Cup will start on May 30 with hosts England taking on South Africa in the tournament-opener. This year’s edition will see all the teams playing against each other once. The top four teams will then make it to the semifinal before the winners of those two games take on each other in the final at the iconic Lord’s on July 14.
