Harbhajan Singh, former Indian off-spinner, has said that talented wicketkeeper-batsman, Rishabh Pant, hasn’t really lived to the expectations in the past 12-18 months but backed the southpaw’s ability to bounce back with a string of consistent performances.

The last time Team India visited Australia, Rishabh Pant was the flavor of Indian cricket. He had just replaced the legendary MS Dhoni in the shortest format of the game, post which his hundred at the Sydney Cricket Ground in the Test series- the first Indian wicketkeeper to do so- had propelled him to the superstar status.

Two years and a plethora of inconsistent performances later, Pant has not only found himself out of the white-ball set-up after KL Rahul and Sanju Samson leapfrogged him as first and second-choice wicket-keeper’s respectively, but his place in the Test team is also not secured and the southpaw will be desperate to nail in some consistent performances in the upcoming four-match Test series.

”Rishabh Pant has not been able to live up to the performance that was expected from him. But he is young, and we know that he has a lot of ability, and can do well in the future,” Harbhajan Singh told Sports Tak.

“Even in the recently concluded IPL 2020, he did not have a very successful run. He did not score a lot for Delhi Capitals, but we know that he is a quality player, and if he wants to make a comeback to all the three formats of the game, then he will have to score runs and show his ability. I believe that he will be able to do that in the near future,” he added.

Pant endured a mediocre IPL 2020 campaign by his standards but the talented southpaw showed signs of regaining his form when he stroked a crucial half-century in the summit clash against the Mumbai Indians. The Delhi batsman will hope to carry the same form in the Test series.
