Riding on Rohit Sharma’s blistering century, India saw off a spirited chase from Sri Lanka to win the second T20 International in Indore by 88 runs and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Chasing an improbable 261, Sri Lanka were off to a fine start with Niroshan Dickwella and Upul Tharanga adding 36 runs before the former was dismissed by Jaydev Unadkat. Dickwella’s departure brought Kusal Perera on the crease and the southpaw began firing on all cylinders right from the word go, hitting Kuldeep Yadav for a couple of sixes at the start of his inning to make his intentions clear.

He along with Upul Tharanga gave the hosts a mighty scare as they took  the Indian bowlers to the cleaners. The duo went on to add 109 runs off just 53 balls for the second wicket. Their chase, however, was derailed once the partnership was broken by Yuzvendra Chahal when he accounted for Tharanga. Within no time, Sri Lanka found themselves reduced to 164 for 7 from 145 for 1. The Islanders were eventually restricted to 172.

Earlier, India fully cashed in on the opportunity to bat first on a flat wicket. After a steady start that saw 18 runs coming off the first three overs, KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma shifted gears and did not stop thereafter. In the fourth over, Rahul hit Dushmantha Chameera for a maximum before Rohit hit 3 fours and as many sixes in the next two overs to help India race away to 59 in the powerplay.

Rohit soon took the charge and blew away the opposition with his stunning assault. By the time the tenth over ended, India’s scoreboard was reading a commanding 117 for no loss with Rohit batting on 73 off  just 29 and Rahul on 44.

Continuing his red-hot form, Rohit went on to complete his century off just 35 balls to equal David Miller’s record of fastest-ever T20I century. Sri Lanka finally managed to dismiss Rohit in the 13th over but by then the India opener had already done the damage. He scored 118 off just 43 balls with the help of 12 fours and 10 sixes. After Rohit’s dismissal, Rahul took the charge and scored 89 off 49 to help India finish the proceedings with the bat on a strong note.
