New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson revealed in a recent interview that he won’t be able to play against India in the upcoming Test series because he doesn’t want to aggravate his injury.

The 28-year-old made his debut against Australia last year, but lasted just 11 overs, after which he injured his calf, and had to pull out of the match. Since then, he has been recuperating from that setback, slowly working his way back to gain full fitness.

Ferguson revealed that he has set a target by which he will make his return to the national team. But the upcoming Test series versus India has come too soon for him. Thus, he doesn’t expect himself to be named in the squad that will play against the visitors.

Notably, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) selectors are yet to name Kiwis squad for their next assignment against India

Lockie Ferguson talks about his return from injury, and reveals that he wants to play more Test matches:

The right-arm speedster said he is targetting the limited-overs series versus Australia in March as a more realistic date of return.

“Of course the goal is for me to get back as soon as possible, but there is so much cricket coming up this year,” Ferguson told Stuff Media in Auckland on Friday.

“We’ve got a lot of white-ball stuff and I head away to the IPL as well, so it’s important with a calf injury, where there’s a high percentage chance of re-injury, that we be conservative,” he said.

Ferguson added that he will be focusing on playing more Test cricket, as he feels it is more ‘challenging.’

“Since I started playing professional cricket, it has been my goal to play Test cricket, because personally I feel that’s the biggest challenge,” he said.

He further added, “I am obviously super stoked to be playing one-dayers and T20s for New Zealand, I love every moment of it, but playing red-ball has been a big goal of mine.”

New Zealand will play India in the first of the two-test series on February 21st, at Wellington. Then, they will take the short trip to Australia, to play three ODIs and as many T20Is.
