It was his performance for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League that shot Ravichandran Ashwin fruitful the limelight.

The lanky off-spinner was bought by the Chennai-based franchise in 2009 but could play only a couple of games in his maiden season.

However, he enjoyed a breakthrough season in the following year which earned him his maiden India call, and he has not looked back since then. He not only went on to become the spin spearhead of the franchise but also of the national team. The right-arm spinner helped the franchise win two Indian Premier League titles and as many now-scrapped Champions League T20 titles.

However, his highly successful association with the association came to an unexpected halt when the franchise along with Rajasthan Royals got suspended for a couple of years in 2015 on corruption charges.

Ashwin was signed up by Rising Pune Supergiant thereafter but expectations were high the Super Kings would retain him when they return to the league in the upcoming season.

But the two-time IPL champions did not retain the spinner and surprisingly did not go all out for him in this year’s auction, as the India star was snapped up by Kings XI Punjab for a whopping amount of Rs 7.6 crore. Not surprisingly, the off-spinner, who is a crowd favourite in Chennai, expressed his disappointment after not being re-signed by the Super Kings.

“Obviously I was a tad disappointed. I have been here for the past ten years. Literally, I own that space at Chepauk. The cheer that I got every time I came on to bowl, I will miss that. The auction is very unpredictable and probably if you saw this auction, people were not going all guns blazing. I am a bit disappointed that I will not be turning up for CSK,” Ashwin told reporters after the Group ‘C’ match between Tamil Nadu and Gujarat in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
