The return of MS Dhoni saw Chennai Super Kings return to winnings as they beat Delhi Capitals in the clash of titans to overtake Delhi in the points table at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
In pursuit, Delhi Capitals had a flying start despite losing Prithvi Shaw in the first over. Skipper Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan took the attack early using the pace of the delivery. They crossed the 50-run mark in just 5.3 overs to set the tone for the run chase. But once MS Dhoni brought his spinners, they were all over the Delhi Capitals batsmen. Harbhajan Singh cleaned up Dhawan before Imran Tahir removed Rishabh Pant in the next over. This has been the highlight of Pant’s batting as he failed to offer consistency.

Ravindra Jadeja also joined the party to remove Colin Ingram in the next over to have Delhi at 63 for four. Then it was almost game over the for the Delhi as Imran Tahir, and Ravindra Jadeja ran over them along with some brilliant glovework by Dhoni. The Chennai Super Kings skipper showcased some excellent work to remove Chris Morris and Shreyas Iyer. While Jagdeesh Suchit and Amit Mishra tried to stretch the innings but some excellent work from Shane Watson got Suchit runout. Imran Tahir got the final breakthrough to finish the innings as Chennai beat Delhi by 80 runs.

Previously, Chennai Super Kings had a very slow start after Delhi skipper Shreyas Iyer asked them to bat first. The defending champions lost Shane Watson in the fourth over to young Jagdeesh Suchit. Since then, Suresh Raina and Faf du Plessis stitched a partnership to bail their side out. However, Delhi Capitals bowlers used the slowness of the pitch to keep both the star batters in check. Raina finally started given the innings some impetus while du Plessis found it hard as they managed to post 53 for one in the ten overs.

Meanwhile, Chennai started to up the ante, and in the process, Faf du Plessis departed to have Delhi at 87 for two. Suresh Raina soon followed the suit after scoring his 37th IPL fifty. Since then, Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni -back from missing the last game gave some momentum as they started to take the attack to the opposition. Although Jadeja departed after a quickfire 10-balls 25, Dhoni continued with his hitting. The Chennai skipper looked in excellent touch taking the Delhi bowlers to cleaners to help his side post 179 runs.
Twitter Reactions
The frustration of watching Rishabh Pant bat. Fabulous first shot and then a big hit to the fielder. Had the opportunity of controlling a tough run chase.

You have to love Imran Tahir. At his age, playing with the same passion as ever. And still winning matches.

The Delhi captain might as well stand with a salute because he’s watching his team do a march past in front of him #CSKvDC

For the first time in CSK’s IPL history, they have had to depend a lot on Dhoni the batsman along with Dhoni the Captain. Hence playing today despite not being 100%. #CSKvDC

Mahendra King Bahubali !!! 💛🦁
Be it finishing or be it smart stumpings or be it guiding the bowlers. He has mastered the art.— Prabhu (@Cricprabhu) May 1, 2019
How? How does chennai and Dhoni always do this? After such a terrible start, 179 on a wicket where the avg 1st innings score was 140. HOW? Also, after Jadeja's wicket he gets in Rayudu instead of Bravo or even Kedar. HOW? HOW? Just Dhoni things. #CSKvDC
