Three-time champions Chennai Super Kings have secured the services of England allrounder Sam Curran in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). Curran, who registered himself at a base price of INR 1 crore, caused a bidding war between Delhi Capitals and the Super Kings before the latter had the last laugh. Super Kings shelled out INR 5.5 crores to sign the allrounder.

Sam Curran was a surprising release by Kings XI Punjab ahead of this auction. In the last auction, he was the costliest overseas player with Kings XI Punjab spending a whopping INR 7.2 crore to secure his services. The likes of Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore also showed interest in him before Kings XI Punjab secured his services.

The England allrounder became a sensation after impressing in the home Test series against India last year. He was the player-of-the-match in the first Test when he took crucial wickets in the first innings and scored a stunning counter-attacking 63 to give England a total to defend when they were reeling at 87-7.

He impressed again at the Ageas Bowl when he hit 78 and 46, helping England win the game. Sam Curran  was named Player of the Series, having contributed 272 runs and 11 wickets in England’s 4-1 series victory. The performance against India was one of the main reasons behind his huge price tag in IPL auction for 2019.

He did well in the IPL too as he picked up 10 wickets – which included a sensational hat-trick against Delhi Capitals at Mohali. The talented Englishman finished with figures of 4/11 in that game and turned the tide in his team’s favour with that fiery spell. He also proved his worth with the bat, scoring 55* off just 24 balls at home against Kolkata Knight Riders.
