Defending champions Mumbai Indians had retained 18 players of the squad that helped them win the IPL for a record fourth time earlier this year. At the same time, they also released 12 players. Just like the previous years, the four-time champions retained the core of the team including veteran fast-bowler Lasith Malinga.

Among the notable players who were released by the reigning champions were Evin Lewis, Jason Behrendoff and Alzarri Joseph . All the three players proved their worth at some stage last season but Mumbai decided to let them go. Lewis had given a flying start to the team during the powerplay in several matches, while Joseph had taken 6 wickets against Rajasthan Royals in a low-scoring game to provide his team a crucial win last season.

Ahead of the auction, Mumbai Indians had traded in Dhawal Kulkarni, Trent Boult and Sherfane Rutherford. Going into the auction, the franchise had the option of filling up slots for five domestic and two foreign players. They started by roping in former Kolkata Knight Riders opener Chris Lynn at his base price of INR 2 crore.

Their two other buys were Mohsin Khan, Digvijay Deshmukh.
