With just 232 runs on the board to defend in a crucial clash against formidable England, Sri Lanka needed their most experienced cricketer Lasith Malinga to deliver and the pace spearhead did not disappoint. The veteran fast-bowler picked up 4 wickets in a stunning spell to power Sri Lanka to a stunning 20-run win over England.

It looked all over for Sri Lanka when they ended their innings on a modest 232 for 9. However, the Islanders bowled remarkably well to bowl out the hosts and one of the favourites for 212. Lasith Malinga was the star of the show, picking up 4 for 43 off his ten overs. Lasith Malinga gave Sri Lanka a flying start by dismissing Jonny Bairstow for a first-ball duck in the very first over. A few moments, later he dismissed James Vince to reduce England to 26 for 2 and turn the game on its head.

Joe Root then threatened to take the game away from Sri Lanka by scoring another fifty. However, before he could bat England to the win, Malinga struck again to remove him. The right-arm pacer then dismissed the dangerous Jos Buttler to cap off a fine day. His crucial breakthroughs did not allow England to get the momentum as they suffered their second loss of the tournament.

And the 4-wicket haul helped Malinga add another feather to his cap. He became the second Sri Lanka bowler after the great Muttiah Muralitharan to breach the 50-wicket mark in World Cups. Malinga now has 51 wickets from 38 games. Glenn McGrath, Wasim Akram are the other two bowlers to take 50 or more wickets in World Cup.
