The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Thursday, announced the list of players who have earned central contracts. The contracts will run for the period from October 2019 to September 2020. MS Dhoni’s absence from the list highlights the recently-awaited central contracts. The former India skipper’s
name didn’t feature in the 27 contracts handed out by the Indian board.

MS Dhoni last played for India during the World Cup in 2019 and since then, there has been only suspense around his future. He had been awarded a Grade A contract. There is still no clarity over when will he return to action. India head coach Ravi Shastri recently said that Dhoni could still make it to the squad for the T20 World Cup if he does well in this year’s Indian Premier League.

MS Dhoni, meanwhile, is not the only name to miss out from the central contracts. Overall, four players have been dropped from the list. Apart from MS Dhoni – Dinesh Karthik, Ambati Rayudu and Khaleel Ahmed have also lost their central contracts. Karthik last played for India during the semifinal loss to New Zealand in the World Cup.

Karthik has not earned any recall from the team since then and is unlikely to get one anytime soon as India have been busy trying out youngsters in the middle-order. Ambati Rayudu, on the other hand, had retired from international cricket after the World Cup snub before overturning his decision. He last played for India during the ODI series against Australia at home last year.

As far as Khaleel Ahmed is concerned, his last appearance for India came in November during the Nagpur T20I against Bangladesh. The left-arm pacer has not really managed to impress despite being given ample chances.
