Wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni has played a pivotal role for India particularly in the limited-overs cricket and Wednesday (December 20) was no different in Cuttack’s Barabati Stadium when he affected four dismissals behind the stumps after remaining unbeaten on 39 off just 22 balls.

Dhoni affected the stumping of Niroshan Dickwella and then Thisara Perera and completed the regulation catch of opening batsman Upul Tharanga before top-order batsman Kusal Perera was sent back by wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

Known for wielding the willow like an axe, Dhoni smashed four boundaries and a maximum to score at the strike-rate of 177.27 after a slow start.

The right-handed batsman and unorthodox in style when it comes to his batting stance, Dhoni has been spectacular with the bat while further saw him winning many games for his national recent.

However, in the first match of the Twenty20 International series against Thisara Perera-led Sri Lanka

The 36-year-old Dhoni, who has been at the forefront to contribute with the ball and while donning the gloves further in the recent past, has notched up records under his belt.

Pertinently, with the final-ball six on the bowling of Lankan leader Thisara Perera, who sent down the 20th over of Indian innings, Dhoni made it to the five-times as India posted 180 on board for the loss of three wickets.

In response, toothless Lions were strangulated on 87 in 16 overs, as the leg-spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal bagged four wickets for 23 runs in four overs and seam-bowling all-rounder claimed three scalps — to give India the highest win (93 runs) in terms of runs in T20Is.

Interestingly, no one seems near to Dhoni as Sri Lankan all-rounder has done it twice alongside New Zealand’s Nathan McCullum who is further followed by Bangladesh’s Mashrafe Mortaza and Afghanistan’s wicket-keeper batsman Shafiqullah.

All four players have achieved the feat twice in the shortest version of the game with Dhoni extending his lead to five.

Dhoni whose experience has been bearing fruitful results for the national side might not be having the decent record according to his ability with the bat in the T20Is but he has been safe as a house behind the stumps to make life difficult for the batsmen who have a liking to come down the track and score runs freely.

Composed in nature, Dhoni made his T20I debut against South Africa in Johannesburg and went on to play 84 matches in which he scored 1,320 runs at an average of 36.66. He has a solitary half-century under his belt.
