As a reasonably new entrant in the area of captaincy business, Mahmudullah Riyad has a lot to learn about it. Having been handed the T20I captaincy in 2018, he lead the team calmly amid their inconsistencies. Even though under Mahmudullah Riyad Bangladesh has only won four out of eight T20Is, he received praises for his composure. Being an inexperienced skipper, the all-rounder couldn’t have picked a better candidate than MS Dhoni to look up to.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni needs little introduction. As a leader, only very few are more composed and better tacticians than the veteran. He boasts of leading India to a World Cup title, a Champions Trophy victory, and a T20 World Cup triumph. With the bat, the 38-year old has played 350 ODIs having more than 10000 runs, averaging 50.

Mahmudullah Riyad revealed during a live Facebook session with CricFrenzy that he is an avid MS Dhoni fan. The 34-year old mentioned how he composes himself while batting at number five or six. Bangladesh’s T20 skipper went on to say that whenever he is idle, he watches his knocks.

“I’m a huge fan of MS Dhoni, the way he controls himself. He also batted at five-six for the India team and whenever I sit idle I try to watch his innings, even watch live games of his. And try to learn how he composes himself in the game.”

The praises for the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman didn’t stop from Mymensingh-born cricketer. He was impressed with the way MS Dhoni has maintained an average of more than 50 in ODI cricket for so many years. Being an outstanding finisher and how he takes the game deep, Mahmudullah Riyad claimed that Dhoni had a massive influence on his career.

“It is not easy having 50 plus average in ODI cricket for so many matches and having a strike rate of 90 plus, it’s amazing and the way he controls the game till the last, similarly I also have to bat at five-six so I try to learn these things from him. He’s been a great influence in my cricket arena.”
