Veteran Bangladesh star Mashrafe Mortaza has sought some time from Bangladesh Cricket Board to take a call on his future. Speculations are high over Mashrafe Mortaza’s retirement. The first time the subject had emerged when Bangladesh played their third ODI of the home series against the West Indies in Sylhet.

Since then, there have been speculation on Mortaza’s future. The Bangladesh captain has looked like a pale shadow of his usual self in recent times. Not only has he struggled with his form but also with injuries.

He had previously stressed that he would take a call on his future after returning to Bangladesh after the World Cup. Mashrafe had a disastrous World Cup campaign where he picked only one wicket from eight matches.  However, those plans changed when he suffered an injury ahead of the tour of Sri Lanka. Bangladesh had a terrible tour of Sri Lanka as they were whitewashed in the three-match ODI series.

Reports now suggest that Mashrafe Mortaza has decided against taking retirement in the coming days at least. Bangladesh board had earlier informed that the officials and Mortaza would have a meeting after the festival of Eid. The parties did meet on Saturday where Mortaza sought some more time to decide his next course of action.

With Mortaza now asking for more time, Bangladesh are unlikely to arrange the one-off ODI they were planning against Zimbabwe to give farewell to Mortaza. Bangladesh will play their next ODI in Ireland in June 2020 while they are expected to host Sri Lanka in December 2020. But as of now, Mortaza is unlikely to retire.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, recently announced Bangladesh will host Afghanistan in a one-off Test, followed by a tri-nation T20I series involving Afghanistan and Zimbabwe in September.
