Split-captaincy has been a point of discussion since long. As of today, majority teams in international cricket have adopted the system of split-captaincy to reduce the pressure on one skipper. India is one of those, which hasn’t resorted to the same. Former English skipper Nasser Hussain has revealed his stand on the same.

With MS Dhoni giving up his leadership position in 2016, Virat Kohli took it up for all three formats. Kohli was already appointed as the skipper of the Test team in 2014 when Dhoni retired from the version. But in recent times, several experts feel that Rohit Sharma is ready to take up the position in the limited-overs format. Rohit’s astounding returns as captain of the Mumbai Indians further boosts the notion while Kohli’s leadership tactics have come under question plenty of times.

Meanwhile, Nasser Hussain pointed out that it all depends on the personality when it comes to split-captaincy. While giving the example of Joe Root-Eoin Morgan in the English setup, he felt that both are laid-back characters while Kohli comes off as a strong personality. It would be challenging for him to give up the position of any format.

“It depends on the character, Virat (Kohli) is such an imposing character, all encompassing, it would be difficult for him to hand over, he wouldn’t want to hand anything over. Whereas with England, we have Morgan and Root, two likeable, laidback (characters),” Hussain said as quoted by Cricbuzz.

While addressing the issue of split-captaincy, the retired batsman also reckoned that appointing separate coaches for each format is the future. The 52-year old underlined England’s strategy of reigning supreme in limited-overs cricket under Trevor Bayliss. At the same time, their Test arena suffered under him as they were merely able to draw the Ashes series 2019 after relinquishing it in 2018 to Australia down under.

“I think more importantly it would be about coaching, Coaches have so much to do, whether you should have a split coach, they have so much on their plate. Just to give you a fresh perspective like Trevor Bayliss for example he cracked white ball for England, we didn’t really crack Test match cricket. So maybe two different coaches would be the right way to go.”he added.
