Gautam Gambhir was all set to be dropped from the Delhi team for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2018, but it was a non-submission of a report from the team manager that saved him.
The team management had decided to drop the highest run scorer of Delhi from the side for his off-field behavior. Gambhir used to travel on his own during the Ranji season and only used to report to the team on the eve of the game.
He used to be in his zone during the tournament. His off-field behavior was enough to drop him, but team manager did not submit a report on Gambhir, that prevented the most experienced player from being dropped.
He was given a place in the Pradeep Sangwan led Delhi side.
Gambhir seems to be a different player since he had been removed as Delhi captain last year. He did not accept the captaincy of Ranji Trophy this year too, and Ishant Sharma was given the responsibility. But once he was out for international matches, it was young Rishabh Pant who did the job.
It had impact on his batting too as in Vijay Hazare Trophy last season, his highest score was just 99, and in this Ranji season, he failed with the bat.
Until a few months back, he was seen as a replacement for MS Dhoni, but this talk soon took a back seat. He was given chances with India A side for both unofficial One days and Tests too but he failed, and as a result, Parthiv Patel retained his place as backup wicketkeeper.
Talking of Delhi side, Sangwan has been a member of the state team from past one decade. He was appointed as the captain replacing Rishabh Pant. Sangwan is making a comeback from an injury, the reason why he missed the Ranji Trophy.
Delhi will play all it’s matches at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, starting from January 9. The team will face Punjab, Services, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.
This is the first time when Pradeep Sangwan will lead Delhi team in senior’s league.
