Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) wicket-keeper, Parthiv Patel has opined that captain Virat Kohli should not be the only one to be blamed for the team failing to win another IPL season.

RCB and its fans are suffering from a 13-year title drought. Since their loss in the final in 2016, RCB has been disappointing finishing last in two of the next three seasons. After having a good first half of IPL 2020, the team slipped and marginally managed to reach the playoffs, edging out KKR on the net run-rate. They lost to David Warner’s Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator.

There are a lot of other things as well: Parthiv Patel

Parthiv Patel started off by saying that while they had a good team with all bases covered, some of the things didn’t go their way in the playoff. He feels that the bowlers did really well to take the game till the last over in defending a mediocre score of 131.

The left-hander also came out in defence of his franchise skipper. Parthiv Patel said that Kohli should not be copping all the blame for the losses. Parthiv believes that Mike Hesson, the director of cricket, and Simon Katich, the head coach was also responsible.

Speaking to crikcet.com, Parthiv Patel said, “I personally felt that we had a team that could win the tournament. Everyone in the camp felt it. We had all the bases covered. Sometimes the playoff games just don’t go your way. Scoring 130 in a playoff game, we came very close. I thought we fought really hard.

“But as I said, you can’t just blame the captain. There are a lot of other things as well – there is director of cricket, there is head coach – there are a lot of other things involved in it. To blame the captain is also not true.”

Parthiv Patel, who was benched for the entire season, reckons that the Hesson and Katich are experienced coaches, and hence it is not fair to put all the blame on Kohli. The 35-year-old thinks that there is more than just one factor involved in the failures of RCB season after season.

“I personally feel he (Kohli) should not be the only one held responsible for RCB not winning. The role of Mike Hesson, Simon Katich – quite experienced coaches, been there and thereabouts. There isn’t just one factor that is responsible. I feel Virat is not the only one who is responsible for RCB not winning,” Parthiv Patel said.
