The next year ICC World Cup is all but eight months away. Thus, the countdown for the next year ODI carnival has already begun. In fact, there are some Indian players of the current squad who have already made their place secure. Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah are expected to be the part of the playing XI.

However, there are still some gaps in the Indian team which are yet to be filled. One of the biggest gulfs is the number four batting position.

On the other hand, there are some players who give statements that they want to be part of India’s World Cup squad. However, they haven’t come up with performances which can turn the selectors head towards them.

Thus, we take a look at five such players who dream to be part of the World Cup squad:

Piyush Chawla

Piyush Chawla had recently made a statement in which he said he wants to be part of the World Cup squad. However, the only time Chawla is in the news is when the Indian Premier League is running. Thus, the leg-spinner fails to get a notice for his domestic performances.

In fact, Chawla was part of the 2011 World Cup winning squad. However, it looks like a difficult road for the leg-spinner to make his place for in the World Cup squad. Chawla played 25 ODIs for India in which he took 32 wickets.

Irfan Pathan

Irfan Pathan was able to be the cynosure of all eyes when he made his debut. However, the all-rounder veered off the track when he lost his pace. In fact, Pathan greatest strength has always been the swing.

Meanwhile, it looks like a distant dream for Irfan Pathan to be part of India’s World Cup squad. Hardik Pandya has done a good job in the limited overs form and Ravindra Jadeja is also pushing for his place with good performances. However, Pathan hasn’t made come up with any substantial performances at the domestic circuit.

Harbhajan Singh

Harbhajan Singh hasn’t called time on his International career. In fact, the Turbanator was also part of the World Cup winning squad in 2011. However, Harbhajan is seen spending more time in the commentary box rather than on the field.

Singh also wants to be part of the World Cup squad. However, Bhajji is busy giving his opinion to the news channels on India’s performances. Thus, the off-spinner is not making an effort to push his name for the World Cup squad.

Gautam Gambhir is the man of the big finals. He had scored a fine 75 in the World T20 in 2007 and also scored a crucial 97 in the final of the World Cup in 2011. However, it looks like the end of the road for Gautam Gambhir.

The southpaw batsman is currently playing for Delhi in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, he hasn’t come up with eye-catching performances to make selectors look at him.

Never Give up”, is the mantra Yuvraj Singh has always followed in his life. However, it seems a difficult road back for the Indian talisman all-rounder. Yuvraj was the architect of the World Cup win in 2011 as he was the Player of the tournament.

However, the southpaw batsman had scored a good knock of 96 for Punjab in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. In fact, the left-hander is also working hard on his fitness.

But Yuvraj Singh’s is not at all at the top of his game as he used to be. Thus, he might not be able to make it back into the Indian squad.
