Ravi Shastri's Coach Post In Danger As Kapil Dev-Led CAC Receive Conflict Of Interest Notice

Indian cricket is looking set to face yet another big storm if the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) is found guilty of conflict of interest. BCCI Ethics Officer DK Jain has already served notices to the CAC members Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy. And if the members are found guilty, then not only they but India head coach Ravi Shastri could also face the repercussions.

The three-member panel recently re-appointed Ravi Shastri as the head coach. The Kapil Dev-led panel interviewed Tom Moody, Mike Hesson, Lalchand Rajput, Robin Singh and Ravi Shastri before deciding to stick with the former India allrounder. Ravi Shastri’s new tenure started from September and will end after the 2021 T20 World Cup.

However, his position could come under scanner if Justice Jain finds the CAC guilty. He has asked the members to reply by October 10 after MPCA life member Sanjeev Gupta alleged that the trio is conflicted as per the Lodha Panel’s proposal of one man, one post. If the panel is found guilty, Ravi Shastri will have to undergo the process once again.

“The appointment of Shastri as the head coach will obviously have to be done once again if the committee members who appointed him are found to have conflict of interest. A new committee will then have to be formed and the whole process has to be re-opened and re-done keeping the newly registered BCCI constitution in mind as the constitution now clearly says that only a CAC can appoint the head coach of the Indian team,” a BCCI official told IANS.

The functionary further said that the same could also hold true for WV Raman – women’s team coach. The official said that Dev, Gaekwad and Rangaswamy had formed an ad-hoc committee which violate BCCI’s constitution.

“One needs to see what Jain’s verdict is in the Raman matter because in that case also, the same trio as ad-hoc CAC had appointed him as coach even as the two-member CoA was divided. Back then, it was a 1:1 verdict with Vinod Rai agreeing to the trio appointing the coach and Diana Edulji making it clear that there was no place for an ad-hoc CAC in the BCCI constitution that was reworked as per the proposals of the Lodha Panel,” the functionary said.

Seeing Ravi Shastri going through the process would be the last thing that the Indian team would want. The team has done extremely well under Shastri and would have loved to focus on the upcoming assignments without any distractions.
