The former swashbuckling Team India opening batsman from Delhi, Virender Sehwag on Monday (September 17) has resigned from his role for Delhi cricket. He cited that the panel members decided for the best interest of Delhi’s cricketing body.

The flamboyant opener, Sehwag alongside Aakash Chopra and Rahul Sanghvi were the advisory members. However, their suggestion of retaining Manoj Prabhakar hasn’t been confirmed by the management.

However, one cannot confirm whether it played any role in the resignation of the trio. Meanwhile, the respective board also accepted the resignation from them.

Also, they are asked to frame the new constitution by national governing body Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as per the Supreme Court orders.

Speaking of the same, Sehwag asserted that the trio decided in the best interest of the Delhi’s cricket. He feels that continuing for a long time, for now, won’t be any benefit to the respective board.

‘‘We had come together and given time and effort with the idea of contributing and helping in the improvement of Delhi cricket within the framework of our role as a cricket committee,” Sehwag said.

‘‘However, looking at the best interest of Delhi’s Cricket, we would like to inform you that all three of us would not be able to continue with the assignment of Cricket Committee of DDCA any further due to our busy schedule in a day to day life,” he added.

Gambhir’s decision played a role:

The senior member from the capital of the country, Gautam Gambhir wasn’t impressed. It came over the trio’s choice of appointing Manoj Prabhakar. A source stated that Gambhir doesn’s want any individual in the dressing room who was once involved in malpractice. Former cricketer Prabhakar was once involved in a match-fixing issue.

”Gautam has always followed this principle that he doesn’t want anyone remotely involved in malpractice like match-fixing to be a part of Delhi dressing room,” a DDCA official said.

Anyhow, as per the latest rules, Virender Sehwag and Sanghvi should leave the roles for the Delhi cricket. They are already involved with Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Hence, conflict of interest would have asked them to resign for Delhi.
