In a cricket tragic country like India where there is so much talent and competition for places, one bad season or two can lead any cricketer to wilderness. And, once he or she falls back in the pegging order, it becomes pretty difficult for him or her to force his way back into the reckoning.

And, no one knows it better than Robin Uthappa. Once hailed as the next big thing in Indian cricket, the stylish right-hander hasn’t played an International game for India since 2015 but the Karnataka batsman isn’t someone to give up on another national return just yet.

Uthappa is a veteran of the IPL. In 177 matches, the right-hander has racked up 4411 runs at a strike rate of 130.50 and he still believes that he has one World Cup left in him.

“Right now I want to be competitive. I still have that fire burning in me, I really want to compete and do well. I honestly believe I have a World Cup left in me, so I’m pursuing that, especially the shortest format. The blessings of Lady Luck or God or whatever you call it, plays a massive factor,” Uthappa was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo

He added: “Especially in India, it becomes so much more evident. I don’t think it is as evident when you’re playing cricket outside of India. But in the subcontinent and India especially, with the amount of talent that we do have in our country, all of those aspects become evident,”

Uthappa, who made his debut way back in 2006 against England was a part of the 2007 T2O World Cup-winning and the 2008 CB series winning Indian outfit. But with a dip in form and the subsequent rise of players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Uthappa was dropped from the set-up in 2008.

You can never write yourself off. You would be unfair to yourself if you write yourself off. Especially if you believe you have the ability and you know that there is an outside chance. So I still believe in that outside chance. I still believe that things can go my way and I probably can be a part of a World Cup-winning team and play an integral role in that as well. Those dreams are still alive and I think I’ll keep playing cricket till that is alive.”
