It took Rohit Sharma just four innings to show that he can excel as a Test opener. After failing to cement his spot in the Test team as a middle-order batsman, Rohit Sharma was tried out as an opener in the three-match series against South Africa. The decision turned out to be spot on as Rohit Sharma hit the ground running.

He started his career as an opener with twin centuries in the first Test. The right-handed batsman was out cheaply in the second Test before slamming a career-best 212 in the Ranchi Test. Rohit Sharma finished the series as the top run-scorer and walked away with the Man of the Series award.

What was striking about Rohit Sharma’s performances was his brave batting. He never looked nervous and played the big shots at will which made many compare him with legendary opener Virender Sehwag. Well, the India star finally opened up on the comparisons with Sehwag on Thursday while interacting with the media.

“It is people’s perception that we bat in a similar fashion and all that. But Sehwag is Sehwag. What he has done is remarkable,” Rohit said.

“For me what will be important is what the team is expecting me to do, if I am able to do that I’ll be more than happy. Of course, Sehwag played in a way he loved to, and the team wanted him to play. It is the same situation for me here as well. I want to play in that fashion where the team wants me to play. And if I am able to do that, I solve a lot of problems,” he added.

Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, will now lead India in the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh. Both the teams will lock horns in a three-match T20I series. Virat Kohli will then return to lead the side in the two-match Test series.
