In IPL 2009, now defunct Deccan Chargers overcame all the odds, to clinch the title. But their run to summit came at a tough ask. In the inaugural edition Deccan Chargers looked a strong side and well in contention to lift the trophy but dramatically after all-rounder Andrew Symonds had to leave for Australia and VVS Laxman shouldered an injury the franchise finished in the last spot.
Deccan Chargers subsequently lost the ‘Jaypee Group’ as their sponsors with their kit forced to change its hue. It was a demotivating sight for the players who had given it their all but failed to produce the desired result. But Australia great Adam Gilchrist took the command in his own hands and motivated his side to a spirited IPL 2009 triumph after a debacle in the previous season.

However, during the IPL 2009 semi-final, Gilchrist was unhappy with himself after playing a match-winning knock of 85 runs from 35 balls. His knock was laced with 10 boundaries and over five hits over the fence. Former India fast bowler RP Singh, who was a member of the match winning squad, revealed what left Gilchrist furious.
Adam Gilchrist said he wanted to finish the game: RP Singh

“Gilchrist was furious with himself despite playing a match-winning knock of 85 runs in the 2009 semi-finals. He came back to the dressing room after the knock but was angry and furious. I was surprised and asked him what’s the matter and why was he angry after that great knock. Gilchrist said he wanted to finish the game and needs to learn to finish games for the team,” Singh said on Star Sports during the watch-along of the match.
In that season, Deccan Chargers wrote history as they went on to clinch the IPL title.
