Former South Africa coach Russell Dominga has been named as the head coach of Bangladesh cricket team, BCB announced on Saturday. The present coach of South Africa A, Domingo will take over as Bangladesh’s coach on August 21 for a period of two years. This also means that he may not travel with South Africa A for the upcoming series against India A.

Domingo was one of the three shortlisted candidates on the list of BCBC. Few days back, he had visited Bangladesh and was interviewed by BCB, where he impressed the officials. Since then, he was leading the race to take over the job.

Domingo had joined South Africa in the year 2012. He stayed in the job till 2017, before being replaced by Ottis Gibson. Domingo had reapplied for the job then after his contract came to end.

Later, Cricket South Africa appointed him as the coach of South Africa A. He is one of the rare coaches in international cricket who did not play cricket at the senior level. Domingo neither played first-class cricket nor did he play any List A match.

At Bangladesh, he will be reuniting with their batting coach Neil McKenzie and their bowling coach Charl Langeveldt. Both the former South African players had worked along with Domingo when he was South Africa’s head coach.

The 44-year-old will succeed Steve Rhodes in the job. The latter had joined Bangladesh last year, taking over from Chandika Hathurusingha. His contract was to run till 2020 World Cup but Bangladesh’s poor run at 2019 World Cup saw BCB parting ways with him after the quadrennial tournament.

Since then, Domingo was leading the race to take over the vacant post. Mike Hesson, who was one of the aspirants for the India coaching job, was also in the race to become Bangladesh’s coach. He also impressed CAC with his presentation and came second to Ravi Shastri in the race. He is also running for the post of head coach of Pakistan as well.

Mickey Arthur was also one of the candidates in the fray for the job but missed out. He took over as Pakistan’s head coach in 2016. PCB did not renew contracts of the coaching staff after World Cup 2019, where Pakistan failed to qualify for the second round of the tournament.
