N Srinivasan has lavished praise on Chennai Super Kings’ latest batting sensation Ruturaj Gaikwad. The youngster turned out to be one of the few positives in an otherwise dismal campaign for the Chennai-based outfit. CSK finished the season at the seventh spot with just six wins from their 14 league games.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s sojourn in the UAE started on a disappointing note as he was tested positive for COVID-19 which affected his preparations for the competition. The right-handed batsman missed his team’s first game but was named in the playing eleven for the second game against Rajasthan Royals.

On his IPL debut, the Maharashtra batsman was stumped on the very first ball after skipping down to Rajasthan Royals’ Rahul Tewatia. In his next two outings, his scores were 5 and 0 before he proved himself with three match-winning half-centuries on the trot.

He scored an unbeaten 65 against Royals Challengers Bangalore and 72 against Kolkata Knight Riders, helping his side win both the games. In CSK’s final game of the tournament, he scored another fifty, scoring an unbeaten 62 as the three-time champions thrashed Kings XI Punjab by nine wickets to bow out of IPL 2020 on a winning note.

N Srinivasan on Ruturaj Gaikwad:

The CSK boss is mighty impressed with the right-handed batsman and didn’t hesitate in comparing him with India superstar Virat Kohli. He started by pointing out the batsman’s tough start to IPL 2020 before saying that CSK will be back next year after a disappointing campaign.

“Ruturaj (Gaikwad) recovered from Covid late. Anyway, after 10 good years, one season can be like that. Next year we will be back,” Srinivasan told Mumbai Mirror.

Last week, former South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis had likened Gaikwad to a “young Virat Kohli.” Responding to that, Srinivasan said:

“Of course, he is. He will be (like Kohli). Look at his batting. After a long time, we are seeing a classy batsman.”
