Sanju Samson has had a roller-coaster ride as far as his international career is concerned. The Kerala and Rajasthan Royals swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batsman made his debut for the national side way back in 2015 against Zimbabwe.

But he had to wait for another four and a half years to earn another T20I cap for India. Sanju was recalled into the Indian set-up following his record-breaking double-hundred in a domestic List-A fixture.

But despite Rishabh Pant’s struggles both in front and behind the wickets, Samson was consigned to the bench and it was only in during the Sri Lanka series that he got a look-in.

That said, Sanju Samson wasn’t able to cash-in on the opportunities both against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, and with KL Rahul staking his claim to the wicketkeeper’s slot, the right-hander has his task cut-out.

Samson now wants to get back into the reckoning. The talented batsman spoke to Times of India recently where he revealed that he wants to inculcate MS Dhoni’s calming influence in tough situations.

MS Dhoni’s calmness and focus in tough situations is something that I would like to inculcate in my game as well and be calmer and more focussed while batting,” the 25-year-old told TimesofIndia.com.

Samson heaped praise on the likes of Adam Gilchrist and MS Dhoni as he feels that these two guys are responsible for revolutionizing the role of a wicketkeeper-batsman.

“Wicket-keepers today are all top batsmen as well. You look around the world, most of the ‘keepers are very good batsmen. Adam Gilchrist changed the game for ‘keepers coming up the order, MS Dhoni has done likewise in the middle order,” said Samson.

“It is now almost a norm to have a wicketkeeper who is a very good top or middle-order batsman, as it helps the team add an extra bowler or all-rounder in the team.” he added.

Samson also maintained that he does not think of Rishabh Pant as his competitor, adding that the duo share a very good friendship with each other. Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant have played together for the Delhi Daredevils in the past.
