The situation concerning the global pandemic coronavirus has put everything on the backburner. And, the world of sports hasn’t escaped from its influence either. From La Liga to Premier League to Olympics, every major sporting event has been postponed for an indefinite period as the world grapples with the deadly virus.

As far as cricket is concerned, its marquee franchise event, the Indian Premier League has also been put on hold. The 13th edition of the cash-rich league was scheduled to take place from March 29th with defending champions Mumbai Indians locking horns with Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

But the tournament was postponed till April 15th after the Indian government made changes to its visa policy as the situation started to escalate in the country. The IPL, every year, comes as an opportunity for fringe cricketers around the world to showcase their talent to the folklore and force their way into the national set-up.

This season was seen as another such opportunity for the likes of Sanju Samson, the swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batsman from Kerala, to assert his credentials via his exploits for his franchise Rajasthan Royals.

It has been a roller-coaster ride for Sanju Samson in the past six months.

After having shellacked the record for the fastest List-A hundred by an Indian during the 2019 Vijay Hazare Trophy, the Kerala batsman earned a recall to the national set-up after a hiatus of four years during the home T20Is against Bangladesh.

But with Rishabh Pant getting the nod over him, Samson had to spend a plethora of time on the bench. But the Kerala batsman feels that spending time with the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the dressing room came as a good learning curve for him as he got to learn a lot by seeing them how they handle themselves both on and off the field.

“I looked at the brighter side of things. I got to share the dressing room with legends like Virat Bhai and Rohit Bhai and there is a lot to learn from them even if we just observe the way they handle themselves on and off the ground. And then to be a part of the world’s best cricket team is not a small thing,” Sanju Samson was quoted as saying by Times of India.

Samson did get his opportunity during the New Zealand T20I series but he failed to make the most of the chances. But the right-hander isn’t much bothered as he feels that the changes he made to his batting will result in a few indifferent performances initially.
