Shubman Gill will carry plenty of hopes on his shoulder when he begins his campaign in IPL 2020 for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Wednesday. England limited-overs captain and a member of KKR squad Eoin Morgan has showed his faith in Shubman Gill to come out good in IPL 2020.

Morgan, in the media conference, said that the KKR squad has a lot of options in the batting and bowling department. And though Andre Russell has batted as a finisher in the previous edition, he is prepared to take up the role if asked. On Gill, Morgan said that he will exceed all the expectations.

“I think with the squad we have, it gives us a lot of options in both batting and bowling. I think within the squad we have a number of versatile cricketers. I know Andre Russell has played the role of a finisher for KKR, hopefully, if I do get the role of a finisher, I will do that,” said Morgan.

“Shubham is a gun, he is a quality player, I am sure he will exceed all expectations, its good to have him, Gill and Narine make a good opening combination,” he said.

Gill did not make as much waves as a certain Prithvi Shaw did. Nor was he backed as much. But his performance in the U-19 World Cup and the Indian Premier League (IPL) did all the talking. In the lucrative tournament, Gill proved he can be better utilised as an opener than a middle-order batsman, he is solid at the top, watches the ball closely, maturing by the day and can get the team off to a good start.

Gill, however, is still to prove himself for the national team. In the couple of chances he got, the top-order batsman failed to get going. He is only 20, and would need some time to settle in. But he has surely shown in prowess for India A. Earlier in February this year, Gill hit a double century, one century and a solitary half-century against New Zealand A.

Gill averages 73.75 in first-class cricket. He has hit 2133 runs from 21 matches, laced with seven centuries and 10 half-centuries. The Punjab batsman has the highest score of 268 runs in the format.
