India’s victory at the 2002 Natwest Trophy remains one of the most iconic and unforgettable achievements of all time. But the more glorifying moment was Sourav Ganguly taking off and waving his T-shirt in elation at the Lord’s balcony after India hit the winning runs. In a chat with Mayank Agarwal, Sourav Ganguly left the host in splits, having answered a question.

It was on the 13th of July in 2002 that a relatively young and inexperienced India team did the nearly unthinkable. On the back of centuries from Marcus Trescothick and Nasser Hussain, the hosts set India a target of 326. India looked at sea when Sachin Tendulkar departed in the 24th over, leaving them at 146-5.

It was Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif, who turned things around and the latter eventually got them over the line with three balls and two wickets to spare. On the show ‘Dada Opens with Mayank’ on BCCI.tv, Mayank Agarwal asked the BCCI President, who would be the one taking off the jersey if the current crop of players were part of that iconic match in London. Ganguly responded by saying, “All of you”.

In my generation, only two were ready to do it: Sourav Ganguly

The 45-year old further said that the current generation is entirely different since there is Instagram, where all their moves and events get recorded. He stated that whatever the players are involved in, all of it is known to the public gradually.

This generation is a completely different generation. I see all of your involvement on Instagram. Obviously when we were growing up, there was no social media. I love the way how they train with their cameras on. Whether they are doing the bench press or whether they are doing pushups, everything is out there in the public,” Ganguly said.

Hence, Sourav Ganguly would have been astounded had anyone had not done what he did at the Lord’s. Ganguly admitted that along with him Harbhajan Singh was the only one from his time, who was brave enough to do so.

“So, I would have been surprised if anyone would have not agreed to do so. In my generation, only two were ready to do it – myself and Harbhajan Singh,” he added.
