Australia’s Steve Smith played an unbeaten knock of 77 runs to give a befitting reply to his detractors after getting booed by a section of New Zealand fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Despite the Kiwis taking early control of the game, the Aussies bounced back in the end to finish the day at 257 for four with Smith and Travis Head at the crease.

Trent Boult provided an early setback removing Joe Burns of the first ball. Since then, David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne steadied the innings adding 61 runs for the second wicket. Warner returned nine short of 50 runs while Labuschagne missed another century. But Steve Smith after missing out in the last few innings once again made a solid comeback to lead Australia’s batting to finish at 257 for four.

Steve Smith not perturbed with booing

Meanwhile, when Steve Smith came out to bat after the fall of two wickets, he was greeted by a mixture of cheers and boos at the iconic venue. It looked like the Kiwi fans still haven’t forgotten about Smith’s involvement in the infamous ‘Sandpaper Gate’ that rocked Australia cricket last year. However, the cricketer was not perturbed by all of these and said he has learned to block everything – good or bad.

“Is that what happened? I have no idea,” Smith said at the end of day’s play. “I don’t really listen when I walk out to bat. Cheering, booing, dunno (don’t know). I’ve learnt to just block it all out, regardless, good or bad,” he added.

Australia will want Steve Smith to continue his love affair with the Melbourne Cricket Ground and make a big score as the host will want to post a massive first innings total against New Zealand.
