England’s most successful white-ball captain, Eoin Morgan, has announced his retirement from international cricket after a 13-year career with the Three Lions across formats.

Morgan changed the dynamic of white-ball cricket in England following the 2015 ODI World Cup. He led them to the top of the ICC Rankings and helped secure series wins over all the major playing countries.

Additionally, Morgan is the only player in England’s history to win an Ashes series away from home, the ODI World Cup (2019) where he was the skipper, and the T20 World Cup (2010).

In 126 ODIs as the leader, Morgan led them to 76 wins. The win percentage of 60 percent is the highest among all English captains. He also led the team in 72 T20Is, the joint-most for a skipper along with MS Dhoni.

To call time on what has been without doubt the most enjoyable and rewarding chapter of my career hasn’t been an easy decision, but I believe now is the right time to do so, both for me, personally, and for both England white-ball sides I have led to this point,” Morgan said in a statement released by the ECB.

Morgan ends his career as the highest run-scorer for England in ODIs and T20Is. In total, he has scored 2458 runs in 115 T20Is and 6957 runs in 225 ODIs. He also holds the record for the most appearances for an English cricketer in both ODIs and T20Is.

In his statement, Morgan also confirmed that he will be playing domestic cricket which includes the likes of The Hundred, where he will be leading London Spirit.

To what lies ahead for me, I will continue to enjoy playing at a domestic level while I can. I’m really looking forward to playing and captaining London Spirit in the second edition of The Hundred this year,” he added.
